Solid, on-centre contact is the key to hitting consistent distances and directional shots in golf. You also need to be swinging the club down towards the floor as you strike the golf ball.
You should aim to hit the ball then the floor. If you do that, you have more chance of hitting the middle of the club face in the right spot. To check this, simply spray some foot spray or talcum powder into your club face. Strike the ball and see where you hit it. If your contact is OFF centre you need to make a swing change. If it is on centre - keep going.
